But your correct size may be very different —
that's exactly why we measure.

The right flange changes everything.

Your breast pump flange — the funnel-shaped shield that fits over your nipple — creates the seal that allows your pump to express milk. If that fit is off, even slightly, it affects everything: comfort, milk output, and long-term breast health.

Most pumps come with a standard 24mm flange, but nipple diameters vary widely from person to person. Using a flange that's too small causes painful friction. Using one that's too large pulls in areola tissue and reduces suction efficiency. Neither is acceptable when there's a better option.

Nipple pain or soreness during pumping
Nipple rubbing the sides of the tunnel
Redness or discoloration after sessions
Excessive areola being pulled in
Breasts still feeling full after pumping
Decreased milk output over time

Types of flanges

Different flanges work for different bodies and pumps. Carisa's recommendation will include guidance on the right type for you.

🔵
Standard Plastic

Come with most pump kits. Rigid, easy to clean, widely available in many sizes.

Most Common
🤍
Silicone

Softer and more flexible. Ideal for sensitive skin and those who find rigid flanges uncomfortable.

Sensitive Skin
🎯
Insert / Reducer

Placed inside an existing flange to reduce the tunnel diameter — great for achieving smaller sizes.

📐
Angled

Tilted design reduces strain on your back and shoulders. Great for frequent pumpers and those who pump hands-free.

Flange sizing FAQ

Common questions about the free sizing service and flange fit in general.

Is this really free? What's the catch?+
Yes — completely free, no strings attached. Carisa offers free flange sizing because she believes every pumping mama deserves access to basic guidance without a financial barrier. There is no upsell required and no obligation to book a paid consultation.
How do I measure my nipple correctly?+
Measure the diameter of your nipple at its base — not the areola — before pumping. Use a millimeter ruler or a nipple measuring tool. The nipple is the protruding part only; do not include surrounding areola tissue in your measurement. Take the measurement from the widest point.
Do I need to add millimeters to my nipple measurement?+
Adding 0–2mm to your nipple diameter is a general guideline, but it isn't right for everyone. Some people pump more comfortably at their exact nipple diameter or even slightly below. That's exactly why getting a personalized recommendation from Carisa — rather than following a generic chart — makes a real difference.
My nipples are different sizes on each side — is that normal?+
Completely normal. It's very common to have a slight difference in nipple diameter between sides. Measure both and note them separately in the form. You may end up using two different flange sizes — one for each side — which is perfectly fine and actually very common among pumping mamas.
Can my flange size change over time?+
Yes. Nipple size and shape can change postpartum, during different stages of your milk journey, and even as your supply changes. If you notice pumping becoming uncomfortable again after a period of good sessions, it may be worth re-measuring and submitting a new request.
Does flange sizing work for wearable pumps too?+
Yes — flange sizing is relevant for all breast pump types, including wearable pumps. Note your pump brand and model in the form so Carisa can factor in the size ranges available for that specific pump, as sizes vary by length as well.
What if I need more support after receiving my size?+
If you'd like a deeper dive — covering pump settings, schedules, milk supply, or other concerns — Carisa currently is transitioning to another state so she will refer you to a trusted IBCLC who specializes in pumping.
